Training for Warriors Portland says "Make it meal prep!"
If you’ve read my fundamentals of fitness or if you are a veteran of the kitchen, you know that meal preparation is key to the success!
Meal prep will help you with the following:
maintain a consistent eating routine
achieve your fitness goals
- create more vitality in general
But SOMETIMES it is tough to muster the gumption and set aside the time to do the deed. Here are some ways that I’ve discovered to make meal prep more likely to occur:
JUST ADD WINE
Pour yourself a generous portion of wine, turn up the music and make your cooking, cutting and blanching into a celebration. It doesn’t have to be a tedious and boring process. You can get creative, relax, and enjoy yourself while you do what you’re supposed to do.
MAKE IT SOCIAL
Invite a friend or two over to hang out while you prep. Pull out some snacks for the two of you (your grocery list should include snacks for your work week anyway) and catch up while you get some serious work done! You’re also setting a good example for your friends.
A FAMILY AFFAIR
Have children help you with the prep by doing age appropriate tasks. Measuring, weighing, tupperware-ing, washing, cleaning, mixing, chopping… whatever you feel comfortable with them doing invite them (make them) help. This will improve their familiarity with the process over time and make them more self-sufficient. Doubly important for significant others who “don’t cook”. It’s never too late to learn how to take care of yourself and others.
Have some staples... but branch out to foods you always wanted to try but haven’t been able to make at home yet. Try to make some healthy soul food. Find a substitute for the allergen in your favorite recipe and see if it works. You will come up with some duds and also create life long favorites this way. Ask me about my chocolate coffee chili or BBQ Ribs.
MAKE IT A RITUAL
When you have your meals planned ahead of time and the time set aside to create these meals, you will definitely fall into a routine of excellence. Creating excellent habits is the best way to ensure excellent results.
